Drupal is a leading content management system. As open source and socially-oriented software, its development is supported by a large and dynamic community, distributed around the world. Community members gather biannually at a special conference called the DrupalCon, with a spring meeting somewhere in North America and an autumn meeting in Europe. The organizers for the DrupalCon in Munich 2012 wanted to improve the cohesiveness of the European Drupal community and reach out to other complementary tech communities, so chose the slogan “Open up! Connecting systems and people”. Our task was to create the event design and a marketing campaign to excite and entice the community.
Since the DrupalCon was going to be in Munich, we built a design to fit the venue. We used blue and white, the Bavarian state colors and to portray the cozy world of Munich’s beer tents: blue and white checked tablecloths, the look of country-style wooden tables, beer coasters, and the garb characteristic of the area: Dirndl and Lederhosen, which were used to clothe stylized Druplicons, the Drupal community’s mascot. Our design was used online, of course, but also offline, including color-coded Druplicon-themed t-shirts for visitors and volunteers, event signage, promotional beer coasters and stickers distributed before the event, banners, and the event programme booklets / name badges. These booklets hung around the neck like a typical conference badge and were printed upside for easy reading. All of this helped ensure that DrupalCon Munich, with more than 1,800 enthusiastic visitors, was the biggest and most successful European Drupal conference so far.
