Lemon8: the new social media app by TikTok

Wake up, a new social media app just dropped!
Sandra Bloem

Lemon8 from the creators of TikTok is giving the best of both worlds: A combination of Pinterest and Instagram is already making headlines in the United States and UK and should be available in Europe soon.

Let’s fact-check this app!

What is Lemon8?

Lemon8 is another social media platform created by ByteDance, the company that created TikTok. The app is already popular in China and Singapore and is now heading to take over the rest of the world. Following reports, Lemon8 shares the same algorithm as TikTok. But there are differences! Lemon8 focuses on pictures and videos, whereas TikTok is prominently a video app.

What we can see so far is that the feed of Lemon8 is more similar to Pinterest and does not have the immersive user experience as TikTok has.

On their official Instagram account for the United States, they describe the app as made for “romanticizing life dreamers” and “shopping enthusiasts”, which combines two of the largest target groups you can find on Pinterest, Instagram, and TikTok.

Why is it different from TikTok?

As mentioned above, the app is not focusing on videos only and does not invite you to constantly scroll through full-size videos. Instead, the feed shows multiple posts, just like Pinterest does.

Lemon8 offers different formats, such as blog and long-captioned posts, pictures, videos, and more. It’s focused on the lifestyle topics of food, fashion, beauty, travel, health, and even pets.

On top, creators can edit their postings even further inside the app, with fonts, stickers, templates, and filters. So far, this was possible in a rather limited way, which often led to creators using other apps in addition. (You can already see how TikTok and CapCut soft-launched the special font feature as a teaser for Lemon8 here.)

Where is Lemon8 available?

So far, the app is downloadable in Singapore, Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, and since February 2023, in the UK and the United States.

What does that mean for marketers?

When creating content, start thinking about how your designs, texts, and assets could be adapted for this new app. Or even how you can use this app to add more value for your audience. Don’t sleep on it!
